Tom Birch our new Curate

Tom Birch our new Curate

Tom  is delighted to be coming as curate to St Nicholas’ Gosforth.  He grew up in central Scotland and initially read Economics at the University of Glasgow and Ecological Economics at the University of Edinburgh.
Before training at Cuddesdon Theological College Tom was a climate change and development economist for the International Institute for Environment and Development, a job that took him to Southern and Eastern Africa, South Asia and the Caribbean.  Should you wish to know more about the effects and politics of climate change from Tobago to Tanzania and Namibia to Nepal he will be more than happy to talk about it!
Tom had the very good sense of persuading Jessica that i) he was not quite as much of an idiot as she had first thought when they met in South Africa on Jessica’s gap year and ii) that she should marry him.  He still sometimes  wonders how exactly he managed to do this.  As a daughter of a Church-of-England clergyman Jessica has some idea of what she is letting herself in for.  Jessica trained as a paediatric nurse in Birmingham and currently works as a community nurse in Didcot.  She has spent time working overseas in US(PG) mission hospitals in Tanzania and Lesotho.
Jessica and Tom’s daughter Harriet turns 2 this April.  She knows precisely what she wants at any given moment and is perplexed when her parents don’t appear to understand the comparatively simple rule of life that she is always right. In a piece of spectacularly interesting timing Tom and Jessica are expecting their second child on or about the 4th of June.  However since Harriet was two weeks late they are working on the assumption that the baby will definitely be out by June 20th.  Any earlier is a bonus.  As such the new arrival will definitely make it to Tom’s Ordination on the 29th June, though may still be rather small.  The Birch family are hoping to move to Gosforth in July for Tom to start at St Nicholas’ in August.
